Ripple and Coinbase have partnered to bring the Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin to Coinbase, aiming to expand market access and utility for the token within the US.
RLUSD is backed by reserves that include US dollar deposits, short-term US Treasuries, and other cash equivalents.
Institutional clients will be able to trade and manage RLUSD through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Exchange.
The firms say availability for Coinbase Global Exchange customers — including leveraging RLUSD as collateral — will follow in due course.
Commenting on the partnership, senior vice president of stablecoins at Ripple Jack McDonald says: “Institutional appetite for compliant, high-quality stablecoins is clear.
“Our partnership with Coinbase meets that demand head-on.
“It brings RLUSD to the largest institutional client base in the US crypto market, across execution, settlement, and custody — all in one place.”
Brett Tejpaul, co-CEO of Coinbase Institutional, adds: “Institutions want access to a full range of payment options, alongside the execution, settlement, and custody they already rely on.
“Adding RLUSD on Coinbase is another step toward the everything exchange — one venue where clients choose the assets that fit their strategy, on infrastructure built for security and compliance.”
