Ripple, a provider of blockchain-based enterprise solutions, has unveiled plans to acquire an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) in a bid to expand its regulatory scope throughout APAC.

The firm says that by obtaining an AFSL, it will be able to expand its payments offering in Australia to financial institutions, fintechs, and enterprises seeking an efficient way to move value cross-border within a regulated framework.

Ripple intends to acquire the licence through its proposed acquisition of BC Payments Australia, a payments provider and subsidiary of the Banking Circle Group, subject to finalising the completion process.

The company says that once it has the AFSL, it will be able to manage the entire lifecycle of the transaction while integrating traditional banking rails and digital assets.

Commenting on the initiative, Fiona Murray, managing director, Asia Pacific, Ripple, says: “Licensing is fundamental to Ripple’s strategy, ensuring we can deliver secure, compliant solutions to customers worldwide.

“Australia is a key market for Ripple, and an AFSL strengthens our ability to scale Ripple Payments across the region.”
