German fintech company SWIAT, a tokenisation platform specialising in the development of blockchain software, has obtained permission from the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) to maintain and operate crypto-securities registers.

The 2021 German Electronic Securities Act introduced the possibility of issuing securities without a physical certificate by registering them in an electronic securities register, which can also be operated based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) systems.

Crypto-securities register operators ensure the functionality of the register, in addition to being subject to regulatory obligations, as the maintenance and operation of a crypto-securities register is a financial service requiring a license.

In conjunction with its established software development for tokenisation and blockchain-based issuance of securities, SWIAT possesses the ability to offer financial services associated with the issuance of digital securities.

Custodian banks and other partners of the company can now acquire all technological and financial market-regulated services for the issuance of digital securities from a single source, also gaining access to SWIAT’s digital ecosystem for the settlement and trading of digital assets.

CEO of SWIAT, Henning Vollbehr, believes “for SWIAT, the BaFin approval is another important step towards a global ecosystem for the settlement and trading of digital assets that ensures efficiency, security, and interoperability across all market participants”.

Felix Miederer, chief operating officer of SWIAT, adds: “We are delighted to have received BaFin approval to operate a crypto-securities register within such a short time frame."
