S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, an onchain security firm, to complement its risk assessment and ecosystem development capabilities in digital asset markets.
OpenZeppelin combines onchain security assessment and secure development services with a library of open-source smart contracts, which underpin over US$37 trillion in value transferred, the firm says.
S&P says the acquisition will expand its risk assessment capabilities into the onchain technology risk layer.
OpenZeppelin will continue to operate as its own business unit under the same name, with Damian Brener, CEO of OpenZeppelin, continuing to run the company.
Brener will report to Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings.
Speaking on the acquisition, Le Pallec says: “As digital assets and tokenised markets continue to mature, OpenZeppelin's technology and expertise will complement our smart contract and onchain technology risk assessment capabilities, giving TradFi institutions and DeFi-native companies alike the confidence to build and transact in this new environment.”
Brener adds: “OpenZeppelin's standards, technology, and expertise already power the infrastructure behind the world's leading stablecoins, tokenised funds, DeFi protocols, and onchain markets.
“With S&P Global, that foundation reaches a broader set of organisations entering this market, as well as the blockchain networks and DeFi protocols gaining institutional adoption.”
The transaction is subject to closing conditions and the financial terms were not disclosed.
