The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) has recognised Tether Gold (XAUT) as an accepted spot commodity within its international financial centre.
Each XAUT token is an onchain representation of one troy ounce of gold on a London Good Delivery gold bar.
The recognition allows firms in ADGM to offer XAUT, subject to their own relevant regulatory permissions and authorisation to use accepted spot commodities.
Tether says its approval follows engagement with ADGM in demonstrating “resilience, transparency”, and a “compliance-first approach” to its operations, giving firms within the financial centre a clearer pathway to offer XAUT-related services.
The firm also says that the authorisation is indicative of its expanding presence in the UAE, where it will continue to work with regulators, licensed firms, and regional partners to support digital asset adoption.
Commenting on the initiative, Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, says: “By bringing XAUT into its Spot Commodities framework, ADGM is creating new room for firms with the relevant regulatory permissions to work with a token backed by physical gold.
“This is an important step for tokenised real-world assets and for the growth of practical, regulated digital finance in the Middle East.”
Arvind Ramamurthy, chief market development officer at ADGM, adds: “The recognition of XAUT as an Accepted Spot Commodity further strengthens the breadth of products and services available to firms operating from ADGM, supporting the continued scaling of business activity within ADGM and Abu Dhabi’s growing financial ecosystem.”
The approval of XAUT builds on the Financial Services Regulatory Authority’s (FSRA) prior recognition of Tether’s stablecoin USDT as an accepted fiat-referenced token.
