Tether’s gold-backed digital asset XAUT has received a Shariah compliance certification from Amanah Advisors, an advisory and consultancy firm specialising in Islamic finance.

According to Tether, the approval means that XAUT aligns with “core Islamic finance principles” and allows Muslims to access the digital asset within a compliant religious structure.

Through the certificate, XAUT’s issuer, digital asset service provider TG Commodities, meets requirements for Muslim use, including real ownership of physical gold, clear and verifiable asset backing, no interest, no leverage or speculative derivatives, and a transparent reserve structure.

Tether expects the accreditation to support the expansion of its gold-backed asset across Gulf Cooperation Council countries, South Asia, parts of Africa, and global financial centres supporting Islamic finance desks.

Regarding the certification, Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, says: “With XAUT now recognised as Shariah-compliant, we are expanding access to digital gold in a way that respects Islamic finance principles while leveraging the transparency and efficiency of blockchain technology.”

Amanah Advisors will continue its work in developing guidelines and governance frameworks to further support the adoption of XAUT in an Islamic context, as Tether supplements the rollout with multilingual educational resources and regional communication initiatives.
