Northern Trust has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Australia-based Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) to explore opportunities to advance digital investment infrastructure and innovation across institutional markets.
The agreement intends to establish a framework for collaboration across tokenisation, digital assets, digital cash capabilities, and other emerging technologies, including tokenised deposits and regulated settlement assets.
Areas of interest include liquidity management, settlement efficiency, and interoperability between TradFi infrastructure and emergent digital asset ecosystems.
The firms will examine ways to improve transparency, operational efficiency, and connectivity through institutional investment processes.
The collaboration also builds on work conducted by the partners within Project Acacia — a research initiative led by the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre — which centres on understanding how tokenised assets can function within institutional market frameworks.
Commenting on the MoU, Justin Chapman, group head of strategic partnerships, digital assets and financial markets at Northern Trust, remarks: “The evolution of digital assets, tokenisation, and digital money presents significant opportunities to modernise investment infrastructure and create more connected financial ecosystems.
“We are pleased to extend our collaboration with CSC as we explore how these innovations can support the future of institutional investing.”
Paul Abraham, chief of investment services at CSC, says: “This collaboration with Northern Trust provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding of emerging technologies and their practical applications within institutional investment markets.”
Northern Trust and CSC also plan to establish an ongoing knowledge-sharing framework to exchange developmental insights on digital financial markets, identify new areas of collaboration, and contribute to advancing the institutional adoption of digital investment solutions.
